What is Aquagrain

Aquagrain is a unique solution that converts abattoir waste into a biodegradable soil supplement with water retention properties, all delivered in a single product application through a patented manufacturing process that can be established close to regional demand.

What Makes Aquagrain Different

Most alternative soil supplements are chemically manufactured, do not convert waste, and are not biodegradable in the soil. Most water-retentive products leave contaminant residues in the soil, including plastics.

Aquagrain takes organic waste from the livestock, dairy, poultry, and fish industries and converts it into a beneficial soil supplement. This enables food producers across the globe to grow crops in abundance — even in poor soil with limited water.

Redirecting this waste material reduces the CO₂ emissions generated from current incineration and landfill waste management processes.

Safety and Compliance

Aquagrain contains Category 3 animal by-products that have been treated using Method 1 (133°C, 3 bar, 20 minutes) in accordance with EU Regulation 142/2011. Under EU Regulation 1069/2009, animal by-products treated by Method 1 are permitted for use in soil improvers.

Aquagrain is a patented technology and biodegradable soil additive that enhances plant growth and health by improving the retention of available nutrients and water.

Aquagrain must also complies with EU Regulation 1009/2019 governing fertilising products. A critical requirement of this regulation is demonstration of biodegradability. Aquagrain is currently undergoing a biodegradation test conducted by OWS in Belgium, which is nearing completion. The regulatory target is 90% relative biodegradation.

How is Aquagrain Manufactured?

Animal waste by-product is combined with alkaline and acrylic acid through a patented process. This output is then physically shredded before being vacuum dried and packed for shipping.

The diagram below is a simple illustration of how Aquagrain is produced.

How to Use Aquagrain

Aquagrain absorbs up to 30 times its mass in liquid, slowly releasing nutrients and water to your plants and crops. This enables them to be grown in poor-quality and arid soils with up to 50% less water.

Its organic content, enhanced with micronutrients, delivers valuable nutrients, reduces inorganic fertiliser inputs, and stimulates microbial activity in the soil.

Application

Aquagrain is a powder or granular format, similar to bonemeal, which can be easily applied by hand, spreader, or mixer. The application rate is 500kg per hectare for crop applications and 7–10g per litre for horticultural applications.

Proven Results

The technology has been 12 years in development, focussing on application in food crop production. Aquagrain has been extensively trialled, tested, and independently verified in many food crop types — including cereals, lettuce, tomatoes, and corn — across wide geographic locations including the UK, Europe, MENA countries, and in a variety of soil types.

It has consistently delivered improvements in both crop yield — up to 40% improvement (wheat, MENA) — and reduced irrigation requirements of up to 50% (UAE).
