Aquagrain™ an organic based plant food which can absorb up to 30 times its mass in water.

Aquagrain enables plants to be grown in free draining sandy soils using a fraction of the water that would ordinarily be required.

In its standard format, Aquagrain is a sterile, organic slow release soil improver with a Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) value of 5.4-6.6-4.2. It is pH neutral and has substrate binding properties.

Because it is an organic based cross linked polymer granule it has the ability to hold any number of additional ingredients required for different crops or substrates. The NPK values can be enhanced, the super absorbent ratio can be increased and acid or alkaline can be added to alter its pH value.

Trials conducted at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) confirmed Aquagrain’s properties for extending the wilting point of plants.

Tomatoes were grown in sandy soil where the plants were irrigated normally until mature and then irrigation was ceased.

After 9 days under water stress the plants without Aquagrain had reached permanent wilt point but the Aquagrain plants continued to grow, thrive and fruit.

Trials at Delta T, https://www.delta-t.co.uk/) a company which specialises in instruments for environmental science, including agronomy, plant physiology, eco-physiology and soil moisture, conducted a simple demonstration to show Aquagrain’s ability to absorb liquid, maintain soil moisture and reduce leachate.

Delta T PR2 Probes were buried in sand columns with and without a 1% Aquagrain layer of sand and connected to a GP2 Data Logger, taking 30 second interval readings. 1L water was added to each sand column and drainage water collected.

After 2½ days most of the water had drained to the 40cm sensor and below with low moisture levels (under 10%) for each of the sensors in the top half of the profile in the sand column.

In the Aquagrain column most of the moisture was held in the top half of the column, with relatively little being measured at 30cm and 40cm.
